150 years of Vienna coffeehouse culture: traditional company Julius Meinl celebrates its jubilee in 2012
The globally successful Austrian company Julius Meinl Coffee has served as the ambassador of Viennese coffeehouse culture for more than 5 generations. The success of the well-established enterprise is based on the traditional values imbedded in the company culture: highest quality standards, premium products, comprehensive coffee expertise and outstanding customer service. The Meinl story dates back to 1862 when Julius Meinl I. had a revolutionary idea that changed the landscape of coffee trade for years to come. Prior to 1862, coffee beans were only available for consumers in their original raw form namely unroasted. The luxury commodity was mainly roasted on kitchen stoves and often resulted in burnt coffee that was not enjoyable. Julius Meinl I. resolved this problem by developing a process of roasting green coffee and ensuring constant high quality with every batch. In 1862, he opened the first store worldwide that offered roasted coffee and gradually expanded this practice over the entire Austro-Hungarian empire. The famous Meinl Mohr, which has recently been modernized by the renowned designer Matteo Thun, was also developed during this period.
Today, the company offers their quality products in more than 70 countries and has more than 30.000 business customers. Alone in the catering segment, more than 1 billion cups of Julius Meinl coffee are served making Julius Meinl Coffee the number one company in the Austrian gastronomy segment.
Approximately two thirds of the revenue is currently reaped from international operations. In over 40 countries, among them Russia, Rumania, Northern Italy, Slovenia and Slovakia, Julius Meinl remains one of the top 3 premium coffee brands on the market. In the upcoming years, Julius Meinl is planning to further strengthen its market presence on the international level to ensure another 150 years of success.
